The Mirage Will Become a Pool of Water

Tuesday, June 18 2019

In the previous reflection, we spoke of the mirages that we pursue in life, thinking and hopeing that they will fill us and make us whole. But we saw that mirages are simple optical illusions, mere appearance without reality, and that they can never satisfy nor fill us.

But God is a God of hope: Isaiah 35:6b - 7a encapsulates the miracle that He wants to perform on the dry earth and for His people living in the wastelands of life.

“Water will gush forth in the wilderness

    and streams in the desert.

The burning sand will become a pool,

the thirsty ground bubbling springs.”

What words of promise! “… the burning sand will become a pool…” As Dr. Keith Price wrote in his book “Thirsting After God”: “The promise does not mean that what is a mirage today, will satisfy tomorrow. A false hope will never satisfy. Rather, it means that, once we seek God (the pool) instead of our lesser goals (the mirages), we will soon find Him.”

Jeremiah 2:13 says: “My people have committed two sins: they have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” The “broken cisterns” that we have dug for ourselves are the same mirages that we have pursued. Both give the appearance of being able to satisfy, but both disappoint: the broken cisterns cannot hold water because of their cracks and fissures, and the mirages are simply appearance without reality. But there is a “fountain of living water” that is not only real, but also sure and abundant and eternal: this fountain of living water is God Himself, the only One who can satisfy the thirsty soul. All we have to do is turn back to Him, seek Him with all our hearts, and we will find Him. (Jeremiah 29:13)

Life has so many deceiving mirages and so many broken cisterns that cannot hold water. Most of us have no doubt tried a sufficient number of them already. It is time now to leave them behind, to pursue and follow only Jesus, the fountain of abundant and eternal life. It is time now to allow Him to transform the dry and desolate deserts where we find ourselves today into places where bubbling springs of life-giving waters flow. It is time now to allow Him to turn the mirages of our lives into pools, pools filled with the rushing waters of blessing, restoration and renovation for many people.

Dear friend: do not pursue and follow after even one more mirage. Look to Jesus - He is the only true oasis.

“Yes, my soul, find rest in God;

    my hope comes from him.

Truly he is my rock and my salvation;

    he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

My salvation and my honor depend on God;

    he is my mighty rock, my refuge.

Trust in him at all times, you people;

    pour out your hearts to him,

    for God is our refuge.”

(Psalm 62:5-8)
