From My Mothers Womb

From My Mothers Womb

"From my mother's womb You have chosen me –

Love has called my name."

These words from the song "No Longer Slaves" (Bethel Music), make me cry every time I sing them.

There are so many people in this world that struggle in their inner being with the reality of their conception, their gestation and their birth.

There are so many fathers that abandon and reject their children. There are so many mothers that cry when they discover their pregnancy and that agonize as they carry their offspring to term. There are millions of babies that are not planned, not expected, and not anticipated. There are millions of babies that are born into arms and homes that do not want them.

That is why the words of this song are especially beautiful. Because, even though neither father nor mother want the baby, even if the baby was not planned and expected, that baby was thought of and valued by God. As the song goes, he was chosen by God from his mother's womb – the love of God has called her name.

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,

    before you were born I set you apart..."

(Jeremiah 1:5)

- said God about the prophet Jeremiah in the Old Testament. Jeremiah was known and set apart by God, even before being formed in the womb and before being born.

"But even before I was born,

God chose me and called me by his marvelous grace..."

(Galatians 1:15)

- said the apostle Paul from the New Testament about himself. Paul was chosen and called by God's marvelous grace, even before he was born.

"For you created my inmost being;

    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

    your works are wonderful,

    I know that full well.

My frame was not hidden from you

    when I was made in the secret place,

    when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

Your eyes saw my unformed body;

    all the days ordained for me were written in your book

    before one of them came to be."

(Psalm 139:13-16)

- wrote King David. He affirmed that He was not known and formed by natural physiological processes alone, but by the mind and hand of God Himself.

In the world where we live there will always be babies that are unwanted and children that are rejected by their biological parents. But for God there is not one, NOT ONE, that wasn't chosen by Him in love even before being born. There is not one, NOT ONE, that God Himself didn't know, didn't form and didn't see with His own eyes. Each one, EACH AND EVERY SINGLE ONE WITHOUT EXCEPTION, was planned and created, longed for and called forth by His great love and His marvelous grace.

Dear friend: do you feel that you are worth nothing? that you do not matter to anyone? Do you believe that you were conceived by mistake and that you were rejected upon birth? Were you despised as a baby and abandoned as a child?

Know this:

"Even if my father and mother abandon me,

    the Lord will hold me close."

(Psalm 27:10)

Yes, perhaps you were deserted by your father and your mother, but you are accepted and adopted and embraced by God the Father.

“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast

    and have no compassion on the child she has borne?

Though she may forget,

    I will not forget you!

See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands..."

(Isaiah 49:15-16)

Yes, perhaps your mother forgot you or seemingly stopped loving you, but you are loved with an eternal love and you are engraved on the very palms of the hands of the God of the universe.

Never forget it! Never doubt it! Even before you were born, you were thought of and formed, wanted and loved and valued by your heavenly Father!
